OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP -- A southwestern Michigan man went to Lansing on Thursday to cash in his $27 million winning Mega Millions lottery ticket.
Michael Fomkin, 36, bought the ticket to the May 13 drawing at a Kalamazoo convenience store.
The Michigan Lottery said he selected the lump-sum payment option, which gives him $17.4 million before taxes.
Fomkin is an analytical engineer from New York City orginally, and says he plays the multistate Mega Millions game about once a month.
He said his numbers were randomly generated. It wasn't until three days after the drawing that he heard where the winning ticket was sold, checked his own numbers and realized he had won, he said.
Mega Millions is played in 41 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mr Fomkin plans on donating most of the winnings to his local church.
